Kaštela is a town ideally located between two major Croatian UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Diocletian's Palace and Trogir Old Town. It is composed of seven medieval villages full of character spread along the longest riviera in Dalmatia. This atmospheric corner of the world will take you back in time the minute you set foot in it, making you enjoy your holiday to the fullest and providing quality rest from the everyday stress. With its scenic stone alleys, easygoing atmosphere, no large hotels or package holidays and plenty of charming taverns to sample local cuisine, Kaštela will give you a sense of authenticity that many of the coastal hot spots lack. Today's villages – Kaštel Štafilić, Kaštel Novi, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Gomilica, Kaštel Sućurac – were built around 15th and 16th-century forts and each is named after one of them (kaštel = castle). The impressive sequence of sixteen fortifications was built by noble families from Trogir and Split who felt threatened by the march of the Ottoman Turks into Europe and the stretch of the coastline with the sea in front and the Kozjak hill behind it appeared to be the perfect spot to build their strongholds. Still today you can see many of the original fortresses such as Rotondo Castle, Cippico Tower, Cippico Castle, Kaštilac Castle etc., best visited on a local bike tour. Some of the other must-see landmarks include Vitturi park, Mastrinka – the 1500-year-old olive, Stomorija Biblical Garden, Botanical garden and Kaštela Museum as well as the Game of Thrones filming set in Kaštel Gomilica and the Rušinić and Vitturi castles, set of the tragic love story between Miljenko and Dobrila - the Croatian version of Romeo and Juliet. As a tourist destination, Kaštela today is equally suited for those looking for a quiet family holiday with long relaxing days spent at one of the many pebble beaches along the 17 kilometers of coastline and those eager to see and experience as much as possible in just a few days. Set in the very heart of Central Dalmatia, Kaštela is an ideal jump-off point for many of the most popular excursions or day tours either by sea or by land. Let's not forget the scenic Kozjak mountain as well, the birthplace of the Zinfandel variety (known locally as crljenak kaštelanski) and a great spot for relaxing hikes to admire the amazing panoramic views but also for adventure and adrenaline activities, such as zipline or cycling.
